What should I make sure my child has packed everyday for school?
Each day at school it is the students’ responsibility to have the following materials with them in class:
- Student Handbook (must carry at all times during the day)
- Pencil Pouch
- Writing paper—EVERY day of school
If I send my child on the bus to school, are there any guidelines that I should be aware of?
Yes, there certainly are. In order to keep our students safe while they are being transported to and from school, we ask that they observe the bus rules and understand that they are under the authority of the bus driver. The bus rules are as follows:
- Obey driver’s instructions
- Keep aisles clear
- Remain in the same seat until your stop
- Keep everything inside the bus
- Talk quietly – no yelling or use of vulgar or abusive language
- Be courteous
- Throwing objects is not allowed
- No weapons allowed
- No smoking or chewing tobacco
- No alcohol or drugs
- Maintain orderly conduct on the bus
- No food or drinks
- Driver may assign seats
- Help keep your bus clean and use the trashcans on the bus
Is there a school dress code at Piñon Middle School?
Yes. Piñon Accelerated Middle School is a place for learning. Therefore, we expect our students to dress for learning and success. Please use the following as a guide to dressing for learning at Piñon Middle School:
- Shirts must be black, gray, white, or teal. They may be with or without collars; no logos or photos please unless they are Piñon school logos.
- Pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts may be denim (blue or black jeans), khaki (tan, light brown) and worn at the waist. Please do not wear baggy or oversized pants. Shorts, skirts, and skorts should not be shorter than 3 inches above the knee.
- Sweatshirts and sweaters should be black, gray, white, or teal with no logos. They may be zippered or pullover and students must wear a shirt underneath that is dress code approved. Only dress code sweatshirts and sweaters may be worn in the classroom; we do not allow jackets inside the classroom.
- Please do not wear hats, beanies, do-rags, bandanas, sunglasses, or any other head coverings at school. Heads must be uncovered at school.
What are some of Piñon Middle School’s classroom rules that I can prepare my child for?
These rules apply to all classrooms at PAMS. Some classrooms may have additional "special" safety rules.
- Be respectful.
- Be prepared.
- Be on time.
- Participation is required.
- The teacher, not the bell, releases you from class.
*Note: any violations of the classroom behavior rules will result in classroom discipline.
If there is an emergency, will my child be able to use a telephone to call home?
Of course! We allow students to use the office telephone when there is an emergency. However, we do ask that student phone usage is limited to emergencies.
If my child must miss school, will he/she be able to make up for missed work?
We do accept make-up work. It will always be accepted within the appropriate grading period; please make sure it is turned in quickly if your child must be absent from school. The amount of credit assigned will be at the teacher’s discretion based on excused/unexcused absences.
Will you outline the grading system please?
The following grading system will be used to evaluate student progress in each quarter and for the purpose of calculating the Grade Point Average (GPA).
A - 90% - 100% = 4.0
B - 80% - 89% = 3.0
C - 70% - 79% = 2.0
D - 60% - 69% = 1.0
F - 59% - less = 0
Student behavior will not be part of the student’s grading system.
- Special Education: Grades reporting the achievement of students in special education classes will reflect the student’s abilities and their individual progress based on IEP. The regular teacher and resource teacher will collaborate on grades.
